ARE YOUR FACILITY AND WORKERS SAFE?
The recent event at the Fernie, BC ice arena where three professional workers died from exposure to ammonia reminds us that while our curling facilities are places for fun-filled competition, a variety of equipment and technology goes into running the ice plant, HVAC and other systems, and much of it needs to be managed with upmost attention.
This tragedy should serve as a reminder to all ice technicians, facility managers and volunteer board members to review your practices. Has staff (including volunteers) received appropriate health and safety education and training programs? How recent is your risk assessment? Are your emergency procedures up-to-date? Where are you with precautionary and planned equipment maintenance and upgrades?
No facility is immune from a serious health and safety event, and staff and boards have a shared responsibility to protect workers and guests. Need help in building and effective plan? Talk to your equipment provider. Check out information on the Alberta governments Occupational Health and Safety and Alberta Workers Compensation Board websites, or consult with your local municipality or building owner.
Be safe! And have fun!
