NEW NCCP TECHNICAL STREAMS FOR CURLING

The Coaches Association of Canada has developed a new NCCP model. The sport of Curling will now follow two streams. Below is a description of the new streams and what courses are available at this time.

!!!!!!     IMPORTANT INFORMATION     !!!!!!

The primary difference between the Community Sport Stream and the Competition Stream is evaluation.

In order for a coach to be deemed "Certified", the coach must undergo a mandatory evaluation.

Coaches can begin their training in the Competition Stream (i.e. Community Stream is not a prerequisite), HOWEVER, coachs need to have a good understanding of the game and technical skills.

STREAM 1 - COMMUNITY SPORT STREAM - Instructional
Coaches in the Community Stream typically become involved because their children participate in the sport. The Community Stream has 2 contexts: Initiation (Club Coach Youth) and Ongoing Participation (Club Coach)

INITIATION CONTEXT:

CLUB COACH YOUTH COURSE – Is a one day course that teaches basic information on everything you would need to run a successful junior (6-16) program in your club. There is no certification involved and no other courses are required.

ONGOING PARTICIPATION CONTEXT:

CLUB COACH (replaces Level 1 Technical) – Is a two day course that teaches the skill set of the Instructor of adults who function predominantly at the club level. The Club Coach can also coach 17 year olds and younger in playdowns (Juvenile & Alberta Winter Games teams).

STREAM 2 - COMPETITION STREAM – Coaching
Coaches in the Competition Stream usually have previous coaching experience or are former athletes in the sport. They tend to work with athletes over the long term to improve performance, often in preparation for Provincial, National and International competitions. The Competitions Stream has 3 coaching contexts: Introduction (Competition Coach), Development (expected to be introduced in 2011) and High Performance. These 3 contexts have other programs, each with their own coaching requirements needed for certification.

        INTRODUCTION CONTEXT:

COMPETITION COACH COURSE (replaces Level 2 Technical) – Is a two day course that teaches you how to be able to develop athletes of any age. It helps you to teach and refine the curling skills and the strategy and tactics required for athletes to compete at Northerns, Provincials and some National competitions.

MAKING ETHICAL DECISIONS MODULE (replaces Part B Theory) – Is a 3 hour module that pertains to all sports.
